Lessons on spinning flax, carving birds
Visitors to the William Floyd Estate can learn how to spin flax and carve birds the next two Saturdays during lessons about life on Long Island in days of old.
This Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., expert spinner Lisa Grossman will demonstrate the craft of spinning flax, according to the Fire Island National Seashore park services.
Grossman, who will explain what flax is and how it’s used today, will use antique wheels in her demonstration.
On Sept. 3 at 11 a.m., carver Jamie Reason will demonstrate the carving of shorebirds and ducks by hand and recount stories of the history of waterfowl hunting in the local bays and the traditions of local carvers.
The programs are free. The William Floyd Estate is at 245 Park Dr. in Mastic Beach. For more information, call 631-399-2030.
