Affordable housing should be illegal, because it makes other housing "unaffordable" ["Housing plan gets kick-start," News, Dec. 10].

Community Development Corp. of Long Island chief Marianne Garvin said the $12-million project in New Cassel would provide affordable housing, remove blight and create jobs. That's a lot of money for 36 apartments.

Monthly rents will range from $962 for a one-bedroom unit to $1,327 for three bedrooms, so it is a financial loser. That aside, that's about what homeowners pay in taxes every month. Property taxes pay for education and services needed and used by all, and if you're not paying your fair share, someone else is.

With rents this low, it's obvious they aren't paying enough. Is this fair? Is this legal? The affordable housing concept is noble, but the way it is financed is not.
