Twenty years ago I wondered how many of my friends along with our young families would be able to survive the escalating costs of staying on Long Island. It was 1991, and I was about to attend the 20th reunion of the Beach Bums.

Last week, from across Long Island, New York City, upstate, Sunbelt states and the Midwest, we celebrated our 40th reunion. It was a wonderful day which began at the beach and continued into an evening party at a member's home.

The reunion "flap" reported in your article ["A long stretch of beach," Act II, July 30] was an unnecessary inclusion and cast a pall over the main point: that the connections forged in teen years have tremendous pull.

We are now adults -- single, married, partnered, divorced, widowed, parents, and grandparents -- who find a particular acceptance and harmony together. How many large groups of people can say that?
