Letter: Changes will make Main St. worse

I am shocked at the changes proposed for Main Street in Smithtown ["Concern about Main St. roadwork," News, Dec. 19].
If the point of closing one westbound lane is to slow traffic, it will succeed beyond that. It will bring traffic to a near halt. The rest of the proposals sound even more surreal: medians on Main Street, traffic circles? All this in the holy name of safety?
I doubt if any of these proposals would have prevented a drunk or drugged-out driver from speeding down Main Street and killing a pedestrian. These proposals have all the earmarks of knee-jerk governance, which will cost the people of Smithtown dearly.
