Letter: College faculty are unreasonable

I read "C.W. Post faculty go out on strike" [News, Sept. 8] with amazement: Union president Harvey Kushner believes $60,000 for 10 months of work is an economic hardship.
I laughed because my 82-year-old mother supports herself with a Social Security payment of $18,432 annually and a $6,000 reverse mortgage dividend. She has household expenses for herself and my brother's family of four.
The university says its full-time faculty average $95,000, or $133,000 including benefits. Anybody wonder why college costs so much?
At one time, unions saved workers from greedy management, unsafe working conditions and long unpaid hours of dangerous work. Now it's the unions that are greedy. Tell these unions to be realistic. The rest of us have to pay for their entitlements.
