I'm perplexed about Peter Goldmark's recent column "Both Europe and U.S. get debt threats" [Opinion, July 10], especially his remark about the "fiercely aroused but inexperienced extremist Republican bloc" that refuses to raise the debt ceiling. It was the extremely inexperienced Democrats who got us into this problem.

What is so difficult about living within your means? Instead, we have politicians who can manage their own personal checking accounts but can't seem to manage money that isn't theirs.

Don't fault the group that was specifically elected to reduce spending. It appears to be the only voice of sanity in Washington.
