The South Yaphank Civic Association applauds the recent decision by the state Department of Environmental Conservation to revoke the variance given to Long Island Compost to operate an open-air facility in Yaphank, forcing most of its activity indoors, and to impose other restrictions ["State imposes limits on composting site," News, Oct. 27].

Since the establishment of this facility in 1998, our organization has fought to protect our residents from its unhealthy presence.

We wish to thank everyone for pulling together to solve a problem that not only affected our community but all communities surrounding this facility, as well as the people of Suffolk County who were indirectly affected by the threat posed to groundwater we all share.

Christopher Broszeit, Yaphank
