The Long Island school consolidation proposed by State Education Commissioner John B. King Jr. is a point well taken ["State schools chief eyes consolidation," News, Nov. 29]. But he does not go far enough.
If the government really wants to save big bucks and still provide excellent educations for our children, we need to consolidate at a town level. Eliminate the existing 124 school district superintendent positions and their staff, and replace them with a single superintendent position by town (15) ["Albany joins the chorus," Editorial, Nov. 30].
Do the math: salaries, benefits and pensions reduced significantly, and this savings to be used to enhance our Long Island education system. The student and the homeowner (taxpayer) would be the beneficiaries.
