Letter: Criticism of police is troubling

You criticized a police pursuit that led to a fatality in "Consider the threat of the chase" [Editorial, June 30] and some readers agreed that "High-speed pursuit was unnecessary" [Letters, July 1].
This second-guessing of proper law enforcement is greatly troubling.
The actual value of the stolen merchandise is inconsequential. What is instructive is the compounding of crime. The thieves sped off in defiance of the Suffolk sheriff's deputies. The license plate did not match the vehicle's description.
The death of an innocent victim was solely by the hands of the criminal operator of that offending Town Car, with his willing accomplices. Don't blame the cops.
