Letter: Dangerous squeeze on Loop Parkway

I travel the Loop Parkway twice a day ["Loop Parkway's too dangerous," In My Humble Opinion, July 28]. I have seen many accidents on this parkway. However, it is not the parkway that is dangerous, it is the people who travel it. There are two huge signs advising drivers that the parkway splits and a sign stating "stay in lane." People are in hurry and drive along the right lane when they know they will need to be in the left lane, waiting until the last minute and crossing a solid line to get a few car lengths ahead. That is when the accidents happen.
The State Department of Transportation should place one more sign just before crossing the Loop Parkway Bridge. And perhaps there should be a state trooper at the split, ticketing the drivers who cross the solid white line.

I have been a Point Lookout resident for more than 50 years and there has never been a problem on Loop Parkway to this magnitude.
Due to the new traffic pattern, our fire department has been responding to several accidents -- always in the same area. The signage does not indicate that the two lanes are to become one. The traffic is backed up onto Lido Boulevard. There is also the problem of the drawbridge opening, causing even more delays.
I have also sent letters to the state Department of Transportation. This is an emergency situation and needs to be addressed.
