Police said three children — a 12-year-old boy, a 5-year-old girl and a 3-month-old girl — were in the second-floor apartment on Spruce Street in Bay Shore at the time of a murder-suicide, but were not injured. (July 12, 2011) Credit: James Carbone

Your story "Cops: Slain woman had court order on ex" [News, July 13] highlighted the problem of domestic violence in Suffolk County. It is an all-too-common occurrence that does not receive enough media attention.

So often people ask, "Why doesn't she just leave?" Those who have experienced domestic violence or worked with victims understand that there are many factors that may prevent a woman from leaving an abusive relationship. Research has shown that victims of domestic violence are in the most danger when they make the decision to leave their abusive partner. They cannot simply walk out of the house.

The Victims Information Bureau of Suffolk Family Violence and Rape Crisis Center and similar nonprofits offer many free and confidential services to victims of domestic violence, rape and sexual assault. Our counselors help victims work through the complex emotions related to these traumatic events, while our advocates can help victims navigate the legal system, work with law enforcement agencies and apply for social services. Our 24/7 hotline for information or services is 631-360-3606.

We recognize the confusing emotions and difficult decisions related to domestic violence.
