Letter: Don't lift Suffolk gas tax cap

Regarding "Suffolk lawmakers vote to bring 4.25% gasoline tax back" [News, Nov. 11], I agree that County Executive Steve Levy should veto the legislature's short-sighted and unjust repeal of Suffolk's fuel tax cap. After a long, expensive fight to cap gasoline taxes, repeal less than one year later is ludicrous in the extreme.
All of Suffolk's time and expense is wasted; lawmakers haven't given the law a chance to benefit taxpayers. Sadly, this impulsiveness highlights the bureaucratic waste characteristic of government.
The economy also supports a veto. Repeal hurts taxpayers by increasing an already expensive necessity -- gasoline. While proponents claim taxpayers realize little savings, I believe that every little bit helps. No matter how small, citizens need relief from their overwhelming tax burden! Suffolk's fuel tax cap was a step in the right direction.
