The White House response to the IRS targeting of tea party-related applications for nonprofit status should be twofold ["IRS fight goes on," News, May 20].

First, fire and, if necessary, prosecute all those employees culpable. Second, begin an immediate push for complete public financing of campaigns.

Any citizen contributions, whether from Sheldon Adelstein, the Koch brothers, the AFL-CIO, teachers unions or super PACs, should be in the form of effort, and not money. Manning phone banks, conducting voter surveys, holding town hall meetings, passing out leaflets and the power of persuasion should determine the course of our democracy -- not the deep pockets of advocacy groups.
