What seems to be getting lost in the imminent demise of Long Island Bus in favor of a private company is that, as it stands, the bus system is completely unreliable as a form of public transit ["A chance to get LI Bus deal right," Editorial, Dec. 9].

The drivers are now taking all of their accumulated sick days, and the management is not replacing them with substitute drivers. As a result, those of us who depend on public transit and cannot afford nor access the Long Island Rail Road are stuck waiting around for up to an hour during rush hour, as buses fail to show and subsequent buses are too full to stop for passengers.

I cannot foresee things looking much better for very long. Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano and the Republican members of the rules committee, in their rush to privatize the system, are hurting the working people of Long Island.
