I would like to comment on the Long Island Rail Road's lack of enthusiasm for collecting fares. I have been riding the LIRR for 20 years and every month I plop down the amount of money they ask for. They don't give me a choice.

However, as I make my trip east every evening from Penn Station to Ronkonkoma, I notice that LIRR conductors check tickets after the train leaves Penn and then again as it leaves Jamaica. But if you get on past Jamaica, the conductors seem to disappear. Our next stop on this express is Wyandanch, where at least three to five people get on just in my car alone, and no one seems to check their tickets. Do they have tickets?

I feel they are all riding free at my expense. I keep getting fare increases and they ride free. When I ask the conductors why, the answer is, "There are only two of us. Please complain so they add more conductors."

I'm sure all of us have to work harder in these economic valleys, why not the LIRR?
