I used to love Long Beach for riding my bicycle peacefully to the boardwalk. Now I ride fearfully due to excessive traffic and hurried drivers and bicyclists ignoring safety rules.

I used to love Long Beach for keeping all my doors and windows open to enjoy the breezes. Now I shut myself in with air-conditioning and noise- canceling headphones to block the screeches from the scores of children in the new water park and renovated playground directly across the street.

Now I hope to still love Long Beach despite the city's possibly misguided need to provide us with nonstop activities, such as the surfing megafest and rental bikes. Some of us moved here for peace and quiet -- and those to me are worth more than money.
