I was heartbroken to read of yet another child drowning under the care of a nanny ["Nanny tried to save girl who drowned in pool," News, Aug. 31]. I am amazed at how many adults who own a pool and watch children or grandchildren cannot swim. They simply are of little or no help to a drowning child.

Parents need to know whether their child's caretaker can swim -- and if they are not sure, they should all stay safely away from a securely locked pool. It is never too early or late to teach a child, or an adult, how to swim.

I saw a 67-year-old woman learning in the same class as my 3-year-old twins. It brought tears to my eyes. Good for her! This responsibility should never be taken lightly.
