When I worked in Queens and crime began to increase in an area of Elmhurst, the New York City Police Department put its mobile precinct right in front of the trouble spot and kept it there until things were in hand ["Regrouping in wake of shooting," News, Dec. 6].

If there is a known gang hangout in Huntington Station, keep a police presence there and arrest the troublemakers until they go away.

When Rudy Giuliani became mayor of New York City, he was told the city was ungovernable, and that there would always be more than 2,000 murders every year. Giuliani reduced that grim sum to less than half of the previous total by enforcing laws against public urination and the like. The cops would stop a guy for that, and behold: an illegal firearm. Behold: an outstanding warrant. Behold: a knife.

Cut the politically correct nonsense, and let the cops do their job, before things really get out of hand.
