In response to "Technology poorly used" [IMHO, Oct. 27], while the cost of technology has become increasingly apparent, the technologies have become just as necessary as electricity. Case in point: Europe has a staggering majority of its phone connections to cellphones, while landline phones are becoming ever more sparse.

Granted, their phone costs aren't as high as ours, but we enjoy the premium technologies both in the phone and the connections that drive them. While I do not know the writer's age, the younger generations rely more heavily on cellphones. Sit and observe younger people in a Starbucks using a cellphone. They are texting, emailing, on Facebook, LinkedIn, doing business and a plethora of other activities. The phone is not just a phone anymore; and if it was only a phone, your cellphone bill would reflect its lack of capabilities.

We need to be connected, and while it seems exaggerated by what seems to be a pricey phone plan, it's just another cost of living.

While renting an apartment or a car seems like a better use of one's paid efforts, it's near impossible if people are marginally employed, not employed or are carrying the burdens of student loans. Cellphones carry a much lower entry point in the market.

Those who use technology are trying to make our lives and planet a better place.
