A recent opinion by Thomas Gais and Kathryn A. Foster ["A lift for innovation," July 24] demonstrated the financial return of $5.20 for each $1 invested in one of the five SUNY institutions on Long Island. This level of higher education contributes significantly to our economic and innovative base.

On July 26, SUNY announced a new campus in South Korea. Universities have, for decades, joined with peers around the globe and we are all better for it. However, one has to wonder why, after spending several million dollars upgrading the Southampton campus of SUNY, it was, practically speaking, abandoned.

Perhaps if the same effort that reached all the way around the globe was extended to the East End, the SUNY institutions contributing to the economic base of Long Island would have a greater impact.
