Letter: Wildlife area is no refuge for deer

It is very sad to learn of the decision to allow deer hunting at Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge ["Deer hunts aim to thin population," News, July 4]. What an irony! If this is to happen in a place called "wildlife refuge," where are the poor deer to take refuge?
It's a shame that the refuge is run by authorities of this kind of mentality. Is ornamental landscaping more important than the existing deer? Do the authorities even know what nature is and how it can balance itself?
I admire their concern about accidents. Should we thin the population of those who drink and drive, those who drag-race, or the ones change lanes without signaling or tailgate?
Don't these individuals know that animals observe family life and mourn the loss of a member? It's no laughing matter when wildlife authorities are insensitive to the needs of animals. They should fence off the wildlife territories.
