Letter: Winter hits hard for fixed incomes

As a senior citizen on a fixed income, like many, I was wondering how many of us will survive this winter, with the prediction that home fuel will exceed $4 a gallon ["Gas fuels uptick in prices," News, Oct. 19].
The United States sends money all over the world, and here at home many people will suffer because of higher prices for food, fuel and other items this winter. It is very hard to believe that our government cannot control some of the increases on these items.
Why doesn't the government investigate why the increases are levied on us when production seems to be normal? The oil companies are getting very rich. As we all know, when the fuel prices go through the roof, people stop buying. Fuel costs hit us very hard, so we cannot afford anything for three or four months other than gas for the cars and heating oil.
We should start pressing our representatives in government to do something. We should well remember what happens in hard times and support those who consider the working class, not just the rich.
