LETTERS: Animal cruelty, Able-Ride, Memorial Day and more
This guy doesn't qualify as "good kid"
Regarding "Man charged with cruelty" : This individual did not "forget" his dog, as if he had inadvertently left the house and forgot to turn off a light. Ozkan Guleryuz had surely destined his dog to suffer a long, painful death.
Guleryuz's neighbor described him as "a good kid." Well, Mr. Neighbor, I hate to break it to you, but "good kids" don't torture and abuse animals. The worst part of this story is that Guleryuz will probably suffer no more than what is tantamount to a slap on the wrist.

Applause for Jacobs' efforts on Able-Ride
Nassau Legis. Judy Jacobs (D-Woodbury) deserves high praise for leading a coalition of advocates to try to stave off Able-Ride cuts . Her efforts are a testament to her leadership and her belief that adequate transit and transportation service is integral to the economic well-being of Nassau County and to the quality of life of its residents. We urge her fellow legislators and Nassau County's state and federal elected officials to follow her lead.
We hope this effort by Jacobs and other advocates will be seen as an act of good faith in the eyes of the MTA, and possible future funding cuts to LI Bus and Able-Ride can be averted.

Photo said it all
Why do people wish each other a "Happy Memorial Day"? There is nothing to be happy about. It is a day to honor all servicemen and women who have fought and died for our nation; not a day for sales and shopping.
A recent photo said it all. Looking at that little girl hugging her dad's gravestone just broke my heart. Surely it was not a happy day for these children or their family.

Hold oil companies financially responsible
Now is the time - right now - to pass a law making oil companies that pollute our environment financially responsible for the damage they create ["$75 million won't cut it," Editorial, June 2]. There are too many loopholes in the current law that let companies off the hook.
