Letters: Balancing the federal budget

Regarding your series "Balancing Act" [Nov. 13], with all due respect to your editorial writers, there already is a proposed budget by a top-tier Republican presidential contender that outlines a way to trim $1 trillion from the federal government the first year, and to balance the federal budget within three years. He is Rep. Ron Paul of Texas.
The budget follows the vision of limited government and individual liberty enshrined in the Constitution. Paul is not proposing little changes around the edges, but rather massive policy changes to bring about real savings and get us out of the endless wars and misery we inflict around the world.

I really want to applaud you for addressing the federal deficit. One point that needs to be emphasized is how easy it is to increase taxes, and how hard it is to cut spending.
Your editorials praised Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo when he balanced the state budget by refusing a built-in 11 percent spending increase each year, and truly freezing spending in most agencies and departments. Why can't this same approach be applied to the federal spending?
