Cell tower resistance is NIMBY at work

I am impressed by the marketing skills of those who oppose cell antennas while telling the public how they love cell phones .

They have convinced at least hundreds of people that their lawyer knows more about human health than the World Health Organization; that political activists who support them know more about cancer than the American Cancer Society; and that, without any medical or scientific background, they know more about children's health than the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Please do not fall prey to another propaganda machine representing NIMBY more than children's safety. Let's try and bring Long Island into the 21st Century.

Retired civil servant echoes frustration

Bruce Blakeman hits the nail on the head with his opinion piece about voter frustration .

As a retired government worker, I can say Blakeman captures the reasons we are in such a sad state of affairs in a very simple manner. In 30 years of service, the waste in government I observed firsthand is mind- boggling.

Blakeman's observations of Carl Paladino's appeal are also correct. New York State needs a tough, no-nonsense guy like Paladino to cure what ails us.

Three steps to

good government

Three simple things could set this country back on track. First, it's time for all of us who have a salary or income to take a 10 percent cut. I have a public sector pension and Social Security. I'll be the first to accept a 10 percent cut in both. It may be the only way to get this state (and country) back on its feet. It may open up jobs for our unemployed. It may also drastically reduce our strangling taxes.

Second, we need CPAs and MBAs - not attorneys - to run our government. Mayor Michael Bloomberg is a prime example of how a successful businessman can lead a city. We don't need more laws!

Third, we need term limits. One term only. I'd suggest six years, staggered. This would reduce pressure from lobbyists, with no pressure to immediately run another campaign.

It's time to get people elected who are not afraid to make tough decisions.
