I wonder how the tea party justifies its views on unemployment in the United States. First its members complain that unemployment is too high and blame the president for a lack of jobs. Then they insist on cutting government.

Do they not realize that government is made up of people? You cut government and create more unemployment. Your article "Layoffs negate job gains" [News, Sept. 3] proves my point.

As I was reading your story, I noticed two assumptions: that employers will add jobs at some time and that consumer demand will pick up.

The fact is that for more than a generation, private-sector jobs have been replaced with automation. Employers continue to produce more without having to hire. That is why there is no jobs recovery. That fact underlies every economic problem we are facing.

As jobs are eliminated, consumer purchasing power and associated demand are bound to decrease, unless you can figure out how to get the robots and computers to buy goods and services.

So the challenge is that the work-based economy has come to an end. I suggest that the Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians, tea partyers and all other political groups get together and start discussing what a world without jobs is going to look like.
