LETTERS: Lighthouse at center of stormy debate
Lighthouse at center of stormy debate
I am so proud of Kate Murray for standing up for what she believes is best for Nassau County and what should be done about the Lighthouse Project .
She is not being bullied into giving in to Islanders owner Charles Wang and Nassau County Supervisor Edward Mangano. Murray is correct when she says: "We are in suburbia. We are not in New York City."

What a mess. The forces that scuttled the Lighthouse Project are surely going to be disinclined to support a casino project.
Maybe what they should aim for is a 77-acre park featuring a petting zoo and a famous, refurbished carousel. This would provide several jobs, especially in the construction business, making bicycle paths, each named for a dedicated Nassau public servant. And "nature walks," lots of nature walks.
I propose we call it NUNLEY Park, and I suggest an acronym in case the Nunley estate is uncomfortable: Never Underestimate Nassau Leadership's Endless Yammering. I want royalties.

I do not care what they decide to put on the coliseum property or how they work out their differences with Charles Wang.
What I am definitely opposed to is any thought of putting a gambling casino anywhere near Hofstra University. What are these people thinking?
I know revenue is a big thing on their minds. But is revenue more important than our children who attend that college? Putting a casino so near to the college will only be enticing its students to gamble. They need their money for their education - they don't need to be spending it on gambling.

Empty storefronts, vacant commercial buildings and house values down 20 percent or more, and people think the Lighthouse Project adding more housing and more stores is a good idea?
Add to those concerns more traffic, more garbage, more pollution and more congestion.
Sell the Islanders, Charles Wang, and build somewhere else.

Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray has the audacity to say "I think this scaled-down proposal is the only one the community would bear" .
The Town of Hempstead does not own the subject property. The property should be zoned for maximum flexibility and then sold to the highest bidder.
Let the real estate market decide what becomes of the Lighthouse Project. Kate Murray should get out of the way.
