SUNY should raise out-of-state tuition

With the budget crisis looming over our heads, has anyone considered increasing the SUNY tuition for out-of-state residents? Tuition for nonresidents, not including room and board, is $12,870. Yet if my children were to attend state universities in Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland or Massachusetts, tuition would average $24,000. Add room and board and the numbers jump to an average of $37,000.

Anyone who has a child applying to SUNY schools knows how fierce the competition has become. Private schools lure you with the promise of financial aid, most of which is in the form of student loans. In my opinion, this solution is a no-brainer. Why can't our lawmakers see that too?

Support for patrols

Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice's methods of identifying possible criminal activity is no different from the method we used when I was an auditor in the state comptroller's office "Spin Cycle: Brodsky, Rice clash over patrol tactics," News, July 19].

We used to stand outside the New York City welfare offices and take down the license plate numbers of people driving up to the centers with out-of-state license plates, and going into the centers to either pick up a check or sign up for the various programs. Her method is just as valid in stopping crime as our method was in deterring fraud.

Stamping out need for postal service?

I read with interest a letter regarding the proposed postage increase . The writer still wants his mail "six days a week."

How quaintly archaic. It's 2010 - do we really need bills, ads and junk mail delivered to our doorsteps almost every day? The postal service should be completely phased out in 5 to 10 years.

Everyone will have a computer by then. For money orders or package and international delivery, let the private sector handle it.

Camp anchors more than just the children

Camp Anchor is probably the best thing the Town of Hempstead has ever done .

My grandson is a camper and my granddaughter volunteers at the camp. Everyone there takes such care with each camper. Their dedication and attention to every detail is way beyond the call of duty. I pray God will give comfort to the families devastated by the tragic crash that claimed the lives of three camp counselors.
