Candidate's religion

irrelevant to race

In the article regarding the congressional race between Randy Altschuler and Tim Bishop, why did you mention Altschuler's religion but not Bishop's "LI's longest campaign for Congress heats up," News, Sept. 26]?

In fact, why mention anybody's religion? I thought that went out in the middle of the last century.

What we don't know may be harmful to us

I'm always amazed at the trust the public puts into overseeing organizations. A recent letter writer was "impressed by the marketing skills of those who oppose cell antennas" .

I understand that members of the public need to trust that someone is always watching out for us, with only the best intentions. The writer thinks that those who oppose cell antennas have "convinced at least hundreds of people that their lawyer knows more about human health than the World Health Organization" and "more about cancer than the American Cancer Society."

The public is either unaware or intentionally blind to the fact that oversight organizations failed to tell us that X-rays were potentially unsafe until 70 years after their inception. There was also a time when the medical establishment told us that cigarettes were safe. In fact, they told us that only the smartest doctors smoked a certain cigarette in their advertisements.

It's time for the public to wake up to the fact that it's what we don't know, not what we know, that we need to keep in mind. I applaud those taking on this challenge. Our overseeing organizations seem to have a gross delay. I know that I'm not willing to wait until they figure it out.

Shelter operator

did the right thing

Three cheers for Diane Indelicato, who operates the Ruff House animal shelter .

She tried saving two dogs, found wandering, infested with fleas and badly matted, from being returned to an abusive home. How many times have we returned children to abusive parents and read about their deaths weeks later due to the failure of the proper authorities?

When she answers her appearance ticket next month, I hope the judge listens to her side and reprimands the real culprits here - the owners of these innocent dogs. Kudos to Diane Indelicato. I wish there were more people like her.
