Levittown Fire District gets federal funds
The Levittown Fire District will get an $80,580 federal grant to help recruit more first responders.
The funds were obtained by U.S. Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand and Charles Schumer, both Democrates, through the Department of Homeland Security’s Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response program. Known as SAFER, the program helps departments across the country increase the number of firefighters on their forces.
The fire district provides firefighting and emergency response services to more than 50,000 residents. The volunteer department has 240 members in three stations, but it has experienced a decline in the number of volunteers in recent years, officials said.
“The Levittown Fire District plans on utilizing the FEMA SAFER grant funds to assist in recruiting new members into the Levittown Volunteer Fire Department, with an emphasis on residents willing to receive training as EMTs,” Levittown Fire District Commissioner Joel Bearman said in a statement.
