Newsday's editorial oddly chastises me for taking action that any manager would take upon learning that one of his or her commissioners failed to implement a program. What would Newsday do if an editorial writer failed to submit his or her copy for a given day: A gentle slap on the wrist and then run a blank page?
Instead of criticizing my efforts to ensure accountability in my departments, Newsday should recognize that I am one of the only officials on Long Island seeking to utilize E-Verify and to actually implement what the publication calls for in its editorial pages: a "reliable method of verifying immigration status" for employers. I have advocated for E-Verify for years, even while being painted as bigoted, insensitive and rummaging in the area of profiling.
