Levy to tout expected 57-acre watershed buy

Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy and local environmentalists plan to tout the expected approval next week of 57-acre acquisition of woodlands in the heart of the Beaverdam Creek watershed in Brookhaven hamlet.

The $2.4 million purchase is actually the combination of 34 separate land acquisitions. Resolutions for the purchases were approved on Monday by the Suffolk Legislature’s Environment, Planning and Agriculture committee. The measure is expected to be approved by full Legislature next Tuesday.

“Beaverdam Creek is an important tributary into Bellport Bay and the Great South Bay and these resolutions not only preserve these native woodlands, they preserve the quality of the Creek and the Bay,” Levy said in a news release.

Levy will hold something of a pre-celebration tomorrow morning near the watershed land in Brookhaven.
