Lewis' sac fly give Jays rare win over Red Sox
Fred Lewis' sacrifice fly capped a four-run rally in the ninth inning and lifted host Toronto to a 6-5 victory over Boston Thursday, just the Blue Jays' third win in 12 games against the Red Sox this season.
Trailing 5-2, Jose Bautista chased John Lackey by leading off the ninth with his major league-leading 36th homer.
Jonathan Papelbon (4-5) came on and blew his sixth save this season, and his first in 25 career chances against the Blue Jays. Toronto had four hits of Papelbon, with Edwin Encarnacion delivering the game-tying double before Lewis' sac fly to shallow center.
David Ortiz and Jed Lowrie hit solo homers for the Red Sox. Ortiz's homer was his 25th of the season, the seventh time in his Red Sox career he's reached the plateau. Only Ted Williams (14) and Jim Rice (7) have had as many 25-homer seasons with Boston.
Indians 4, Orioles 1
Rookie Jeanmar Gomez (3-0) remained unbeaten as host Cleveland handed Buck Showalter his first road loss as Orioles manager. Baltimore is 8-2 under Showalter, a game short of matching the team record for best start by a manager. Davey Johnson began 9-1 in 1996.
Phillies 10, Dodgers 9
Carlos Ruiz's two-run hit in the bottom of the ninth capped a frantic rally for host Philadelphia. Ruiz's shot bounced off the left-centerfield fence off closer Jonathan Broxton, scoring Jayson Werth and Ben Francisco. The Phillies entered the eighth trailing 9-2.
Giants 8, Cubs 7
Pinch hitter Andres Torres hit a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the ninth inning for host San Francisco.
Brewers 8, D-backs 4
Casey McGehee set a franchise record with his ninth straight hit, going 4-for-4 with a solo homer for host Milwaukee. McGehee's seventh-inning single off reliever D.J. Carrasco broke the team mark set by Ryan Braun in 2008.
Chipper's career over?
Chipper Jones may have played his last game in the major leagues after tearing up his left knee while fielding a ground ball. The Braves said the 38-year-old third baseman tore his anterior cruciate ligament and will need surgery.
Cueto's ban is 7 games
Reds pitcher Johnny Cueto has been suspended for seven games for his actions during a brawl with the Cardinals, and both managers were suspended for two games. Cueto, Cardinals manager Tony La Russa and Reds manager Dusty Baker also were fined undisclosed amounts . . . Owners unanimously approved the sale of the Rangers to an investment group led by Nolan Ryan and Chuck Greenberg, ending a months-long struggle to take control of the club. Ryan will remain team president while Greenberg becomes the managing partner and CEO. - AP
