LI bird-watching events part of U.S. survey
Enthusiasts will have a chance to participate in Great Backyard Bird Count events in Mastic and Oyster Bay on Saturday.
The bird-watching event, which is led by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society, is a nationwide four-day survey of birds. This year’s event, the 15th of its kind, lasts from Feb. 17 to 20.
The Mastic event will take place Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at the William Floyd Estate in Mastic. Participants will take part in a bird walk of the 613-acre site, a spokeswoman for the National Park Service said. More information is available by calling Mary Laura Lamont at 631-399-2030.
One of two Oyster Bay events will be held at the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary & Audubon Center, located on Cove Road in Oyster Bay. It will include demonstrations about birds and bird watching beginning at 8 a.m. More information is available by calling 516-922-3200.
The other Oyster Bay event is scheduled for Sagamore Hill National Historic Site on Sagamore Hill Road. It will include workshops on bird photography, a raptor demonstration, craft activities and nature walks.
