LI composers perform concert at Roslyn library

Roslyn resident Doris Chodorow, 89, is a longtime classical music fan. In the past she has flown around the globe, including to Austria, Hungary and Russia, to see performances that were recommended by family or friends.

On Sunday, Chodorow had only to travel a few minutes from her Roslyn home to feed her hunger for classical music. She joined about 30 others to see performances of original scores by Long Island composers at Bryant Library in Roslyn.

“It was fascinating,” Chodorow said.

The event is an annual affair thanks to the Long Island Composers Alliance and included a trio from Stony Brook University’s music school, including an oboist Terry Keevil, cellist Agnes Kallay and pianist Andrea Lodge.

During intermission and after the performances, attendees got to meet the composers, Herbert Deutsch, Marga Richter, Roslyn’s own Murray Cohen, George C. Maul and Herbert Feldman.

“Every composer is here so the audience has an opportunity to meet the composers, listen to their music, and talk to them about their music — something that is a little hard to do when you’re dealing with, let’s say, Beethoven,” said Deutsch, co-founder and president of LICA.

Cohen showcased his pieces “Fantasie,” “Serenata” and “Pesativo.” He introduced each work and shared his stories about how the piece came about.

Guests were invited to Cohen’s house for a reception.

This concert was jointly funded by Bryant Library, the Long Island Composers Alliance and a Suffolk County grant.
