LI cops put beach searches on hold

Even as the FBI takes to the sky Monday in search of more human remains along Ocean Parkway and Jones Beach, Suffolk and Nassau police confirmed Sunday that they will not continue their searches -- at least for now.
An airplane search using high-resolution imaging equipment is expected to fly Monday over the areas where 10 sets of human remains were found.
From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Suffolk police said, the westbound lanes of Ocean Parkway west of the Robert Moses Causeway would be closed to facilitate the FBI search.
A spokeswoman for Nassau County police said the plans are to wait and see what the FBI finds through its overhead search before Nassau determines its next move.
Suffolk conducted two dives last week at Hemlock Cove between Cedar Beach and Gilgo Beach to search for 24-year-old Shannan Gilbert, the Jersey City woman who disappeared about a year ago in Oak Beach. The search for Gilbert turned up four sets of human remains in December. Since then, six more sets of remains were found, none of which have been identified as Gilbert.
