Police said the incident occurred about 4:35 p.m. Saturday as officers were responding to a report that Johnson was a suspect in the theft of a Duracell AC adapter valued at $62.99 from the Kmart at 605 Old Country Rd.
Johnson, who was driving a 2015 Nissan Altima registered in Pennsylvania, fled westbound on Old Country Road and pulled into a Target parking lot at 1150 Old Country Rd., when he saw that officers were trying to stop him, police said.
A security guard was then brought to the Target lot to identify Johnson and he was taken into custody.
Cops: Teen tagged local company with gang graffiti
A Riverhead teen charged with painting MS-13 gang graffiti on the exterior walls of a company on Elton Street was released after posting bail Sunday, police said.
Manuel Fuentes Lopez, 17, of 42 Grove St., was charged with making graffiti, police said. Another male seen painting gang graffiti with Fuentes was still being sought, authorities said.
According to a Riverhead Police Department report, the incident occurred about 10:45 p.m. Saturday when officers from the Riverhead Town community oriented policing unit spotted two men painting the outside wall of Truetech, a medical supply company. Both fled as police tried to apprehend them.
Fuentes was taken into custody on Phillips Street and arraigned Sunday in Riverhead town justice court. He was released after posting $500 cash bail and is due to appear in court again Monday, police said.

Police find beaten, stabbed man in street intersection
Nassau County police found a man beaten and stabbed in a Carle Place intersection early Sunday while responding to a report of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle, authorities said.
The 25-year-old man had not been hit by a vehicle, police said, but was discovered bleeding in the street about 4:30 a.m. at Old Country and Glen Cove roads.
Police said the man, who was stabbed in the leg, chest and back, was taken by ambulance to a hospital to be treated.
Authorities said that no suspects have been identified. The victim's name was not released. Detectives, who are investigating the stabbing as an assault, have not determined what prompted the attack or why the man was left in the middle of the street.
