LI executive to be in CPA Hall of Fame

Michael L. Borsuk of Melville never broke any major league home run records or won any big marathons, but later this month he will become a Hall of Famer nonetheless.

Borsuk, a familiar figure at Long Island business and civic meetings for decades -- he once headed the Long Island Association's tax committee -- will be inducted May 19 into the Hall of Fame of the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants. The society said Borsuk will be only the 20th New York CPA inducted since it established the Hall in 2000.

Borsuk, 73, retired in 1999 from PricewaterhouseCoopers. He had worked there, and at Coopers & Lybrand, which merged in 1998 with Price Waterhouse, since 1970. Borsuk remains active with the LIA.

"I don't golf," he said. "I don't live in Florida half the year. My involvements are with the organizations that I was in before I retired."

Borsuk was best-known to the Long Island business community as managing partner of his firm's Long Island office. The society said he will be inducted, at the New York Marriott Marquis Hotel, for "significant service" and "outstanding leadership" in the field.

Is being an accountant boring? "I didn't have reams of adding machine paper coming out of my clothing," Borsuk said. "It's not all about the numbers. It's about helping resolve business issues. You're dealing with peoples' money or corporations' money. You can't get closer to people than that. I was never bored."
