LI nonprofits get $125G in grants

Five Long Island nonprofits and a group based in Manhattan were granted $125,000 this month from the Long Island Unitarian Universalist Fund to further social causes on Long Island.

The fund, which is administered by the Long Island Community Foundation, was set up by the Unitarian Universalist Veatch Program at Shelter Rock in Manhasset.

It was created from a bequest made by Caroline Veatch in 1959.

Two recipients are affiliated with Adelphi University in Garden City: The Adelphi University Institute for Parenting will receive $20,000 for advocacy in the Nassau County child welfare system, and the Long Island Center for Nonprofit Leadership at Adelphi will receive $40,000 to support Long Island’s nonprofits.

Also receiving grants were:

The Five Towns Community Center in Inwood, which will receive $20,000 to support the Latino community in addressing “education and law enforcement policies that negatively impact parents and children”;

Immigration Legal Services of Long Island in Water Mill, which will receive $15,000 for Latina domestic-violence victims;

Sepa Mujer in Central Islip, which will receive $20,000 for expanding a leadership education and advocacy center for immigrant Latinas in Suffolk County; and

Tri-State Transportation Campaign in Manhattan, which will receive $25,000 to organize bus riders in Nassau County to fight Long Island Bus service cuts.
