LI Philharmonic sells out on New Year's Eve
The financially troubled Long Island Philharmonic sold out its annual New Year's Eve concert at Tilles Center and there was even a waiting list for the show.
"It's the largest number of tickets sold for an indoor event in Philharmonic history," board president Jack Russell said Monday. "We even sold the scattered single seats - for a total of 2,070." Tilles can accommodate as many as 2,242 ticketholders, depending on stage configuration. More than 80 orders for tickets were awaiting cancellation at concert time.
"We're not going to be Pollyanna-ish about it," Russell said of the orchestra's cash-flow problems, which caused it to forgo its subscription season. "But it was very encouraging. We made money on this one. The New Year's Eve concert has been profitable for years. That's why we decided to go forward with it."
Russell added that the orchestra will continue its arts-in-education program in Long Island schools this year and sponsor free outdoor concerts this summer.
