LI’s Board of Regents representative Roger Tilles answers questions at Common Core Curriculum forum in Great Neck

Long Island’s representative on the Board of Regents answered questions from parents and teachers Monday evening in regard to the controversial Common Core Curriculum.

Roger Tilles says that he supports the new standards which emphasize critical thinking and problem solving, but admits that the new testing, which is linked to teacher evaluations, can be problematic.

Great Neck North Middle School Principal Dr. Anael Alaston says the testing is putting too much pressure on the teachers and students.

Tilles says there are plans to reduce some of the questions on the tests, but he says many of the tests are required by federal government's Race to the Top program.

Another Common Core forum will be held Tuesday evening at Eastport-South Manor High School. Tilles and State Education Commissioner John King will be in attendance.
