Over its 15 year history, the winners of the ECWA Super 8 tournament have included champions in WWE, TNA and the reigning ROH world champion. And, now, it includes a Long Islander too.

The “Greek God” Papadon, an independent standout from the LI area for more than a decade, beat Tony Nese, Bobby Fish and Bandido Jr. to win the prestigious tournament held in Newark, DE.

Past winners of the East Coast Wrestling Association Super 8 tourney include Christopher Daniels, Paul London, Petey Williams, Tommaso Ciampa and ROH champ Davey Richards.

After beating Bandido in the tournament finals, an emotional Papadon told the fans in attendance that he was “honored and priveleged” to take home the trophy. He thanked his trainers, Homicide and Mikey Whipwreck, and encouraged fans to continue supporting their local independent wrestling promotion.

“Without independent wrestling, there would be no ‘Yes! Yes! Yes,’” said Papadon, referencing the catchphrase of WWE sensation—and former Super 8 participant—Daniel Bryan. “We all just busted out humps to keep independent wrestling alive.”
