BUFFALO - Preliminary round play for Long Island volleyball is over, but the fun has just begun.

The scholastic men's team had a fine showing, winning four of its five matches in the first two days.

Friday was a bit of a downer, however, as Western halted L.I.'s win streak at four games with a 25-23, 21-25, 24-22 victory at the University at Buffalo's Alumni Arena. But the loss won't hurt L.I. too much, as it earned the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye. L.I. plays the Adirondack-Hudson Valley winner at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

The scholastic women's team also got off to an excellent start, winning its first three matches.

The women started on Thursday with a sweep of Hudson Valley, 25-16, 25-21, 15-10, and kept on rolling with two more wins until falling to Western, 25-22, 17-25, 17-19, Friday.

The women are also seeded No. 2 and earned a first-round bye and will play the Adirondack-Hudson Valley winner at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

The L.I. open women also played well, taking three of four matches for a No. 2 seed. The women face the winner of Western and Hudson Valley at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

The men didn't have as much success, earning only a fifth seed after losing all four of its matches in the preliminary round. L.I. must defeat fourth-seeded New York City to avoid elimination.
