The Long Island Convention and Visitors Bureau is set to launch a new tourism campaign Wednesday celebrating “The Roaring '20s.”
A website, www.longislandheritagetrail.com, will be unveiled at noon at The Mill Pond House Restaurant in Centerport that features details and instructions about the campaign, which will highlight speakeasies established in the 1920s.
Historic bars and restaurants along Route 25A that served as speakeasies and bootleg establishments during Prohibition will be featured on self-guided tours. Visitors can choose from itineraries in 17 communities from Great Neck to Port Jefferson. Organizers say some of the establishments have never revealed the mysterious and colorful historical highlights of their pasts.
“We were doing research on another project and found some interesting things about the North Shore and Prohibition,” said Gloria Rocchio, president of the North Shore Promotion Alliance, which is joining with the visitors bureau in the new endeavor. “It’s just something different. We want people to have fun.”
Antique cars and flappers will be on hand at the kickoff.
