LI trio set national marks in Hispanic Games

A trio of Long Islanders put in top national performances Saturday at the Hispanic Games at the Armory in Manhattan.

North Shore's Samantha Nadel won the Millrose invitational mile in 4 minutes, 46.11 seconds, the fastest time in the nation this season. Her time also broke an Armory record by .02 seconds and helped her earn the meet's most outstanding runner award.

With the win, Nadel joins teammate Brianna Nerud as automatic qualifiers in the girls mile in February's Millrose Games.

Glenn senior Kaitlin Whitehorn won the high jump at 5 feet, 8 inches, tying the highest jump in the nation this season.

In a boys race, Thomas Awad took first in the two-mile in 9:10.97. Awad's time also was tops in the nation this season and broke both his school's record and the meet record.

Kellenberg's Katherine Cavanaugh broke her school record in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.12 seconds, .07 seconds faster than Michelle Anthony's record set last year. Kristina Coiro (MacArthur) broke a school record in the 800 with a time of 2:18.27, besting Jackie Pearce's time of 2:22 in 2004.

The closest race of the day came in the boys 55 meters, won by Longwood's Mark Jackson in a near dead heat. Jackson's time of 6.56 seconds was .005 seconds ahead of the next runner and only .01 second ahead of fourth place.

Other notable performances included Odrine Belot's win in the triple jump for Kellenberg (38-61/2) and the Uniondale boys 4 x 200 relay victory (1:30.44).
