The Long Island Association has hosted many of the rich and famous -- Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush and Michael Bloomberg, just to name a few. But Mitt Romney will not be among the names the LIA can claim to have snagged.

Not yet anyway.

Long Island's largest business and civic organization had invited the candidate for the Republican presidential nomination to speak before the group.

The LIA had in mind this past Monday or Tuesday, the date of New York State's GOP primary. (How many of you knew, really knew, that the party had a primary Tuesday?)

The former Massachusetts governor never came through on the LIA invite.

"Our invitation . . . remains open," said LIA spokesman Matt Cohen.

Once former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania dropped out of the GOP race, "all interest in the New York GOP primary seemed to vanish," Cohen said.

Nonetheless, he said, "the LIA would welcome Governor Romney before the election to hear him make his case before the business community."
