Liberty to play next three seasons in Newark
About 10 minutes after Cappie Pondexter led the Liberty to the Eastern Conference finals Wednesday night, she broke into a shortened rendition of Jay-Z's "Empire State of Mind." Maybe it should have been "Jersey Girl."
Because of renovations at the Garden, the Liberty will play its next three seasons at Newark's Prudential Center, according to a report published Thursday by the Newark Star Ledger. A person close to the team said the move will be announced next week, possibly as early as Tuesday. Newark Mayor Cory Booker confirmed that the Liberty will join the Nets, the Devils and the Seton Hall men's basketball team at the center. A Liberty spokesman declined to comment.
The renovations, a nearly $850- million project scheduled to be completed around 2013, will not affect Knicks or Rangers home games.- LAURA ALBANESE
