LIE to be closed for repairs overnight, state DOT says
Several lanes of the Long Island Expressway in the Brookhaven area will be closed for nighttime construction beginning Wednesday, the state Department of Transportation said Tuesday.
Two of three travel lanes in both directions will be closed each night through midsummer between William Floyd Parkway, Exit 68, and Wading River Road, Exit 69, weather permitting. The lanes will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The lane closings are necessary for preventive maintenance work on a DOT bridge over the Long Island Rail Road, the agency said.
Protective shielding set up underneath the bridge should prevent any impact on train service, and LIRR personnel will be on-site, the DOT said.
When a train approaches, any construction activities that might affect train service will be stopped or moved off the tracks, the DOT said.
Drivers will be warned in advance of the closings via electronic road signs but should plan to use alternate routes to avoid delays, the DOT said.
Emergency service providers, local businesses, neighborhood schools, elected officials and the Town of Brookhaven are being notified of the closures, DOT said.
