LIers to be honored for their philanthropy

Five Long Islanders and a local branch of an insurance company will be honored during this year’s Philanthropy Day, held by the Association of Fundraising Professionals’ Long Island Chapter.

The group is honoring the Quinn family of Oyster Bay with the Horace Hagedorn Outstanding Philanthropist Award for the work that Bill and Joanne and their adult children Courtney and Bill Jr. have done on behalf of local nonprofits through the Quinn Family Foundation.

Ann Dorman Adler, president of the Mid-Island Y Jewish Community Center in Plainview, will receive the Outstanding Fundraising Volunteer award. Adler founded a group that provides support to children with special needs and their families, and is active in organizing fundraisers.

Sherry J. Friedman, vice president for development and public affairs at the Heart Center at St. Francis Hospital, will receive the Outstanding Fundraising Executive award for her work, which includes raising more than $100 million in capital campaigns.

Marian Conway, executive director of the New York Community Bank Foundation in Roslyn, will receive the Gilbert Tilles Award for her role in nonprofit philanthropy on Long Island.

GEICO Region II, a longtime partner with the United Way, will be honored with the Outstanding Corporation Award, and 12-year-old Sarah Connor of Northport will be honored with the Leaders of Tomorrow award. She has participated in many volunteer projects, including raising money for children in New Orleans affected by Hurricane Katrina through her lemonade stand, Lemon Aid.

Philanthropy Day will be held at the Huntington Hilton in Melville on Nov. 18.
