Lind ends HR drought, wins it for Jays
Adam Lind ended the longest home-run drought of his career at a good time for the Toronto Blue Jays.
Lind hit a tiebreaking, two-run shot in the seventh inning, Edwin Encarnacion also went deep and the Blue Jays beat the Tampa Bay Rays, 6-3, yesterday in Toronto.
Lind connected off Brad Boxberger (5-2) for his first home run since June 23 against the Yankees. He went 36 games without a homer, seven more than his previous longest stretch. "Nice to join the party," joked Lind, who went 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
Encarnacion followed Lind's drive by sending the first pitch he saw from Steve Geltz into the second deck in left.
R.A. Dickey (13-12) allowed three runs in seven innings to win his fourth straight decision as the Blue Jays improved to 8-3 in September. Toronto entered the game four games out in the AL wild-card race.
Tigers 5, Indians 4: Alex Avila's two-out, two-run homer in the eighth erased a 4-3 deficit for host Detroit, which remained a half-game ahead of Kansas City for first place in the AL Central.
Royals 7, Red Sox 1: Jeremy Guthrie, who went eight innings, retired the final 17 batters he faced for host Kansas City. After David Ortiz's single in the third, Guthrie did not allow a base runner.
White Sox sweep Twins: Dayan Viciedo hit a two-run, walk-off homer in the ninth to lift Chicago to a 7-6 win over Minnesota and a sweep of their doubleheader. In the opener, Jose Quintana struck out a career-high 13 for Chicago in its 5-1 win. Phil Hughes (15-10) had a career-high 11 strikeouts for the Twins.
Phillies 2, Marlins 1: Marlon Byrd hit an RBI double and threw out a runner at the plate for host Philadelphia. Miami lost its fourth straight and second minus star Giancarlo Stanton, hit in the face by a fastball Thursday.
Cardinals 5, Rockies 4: Matt Holliday homered in the first for the second straight night and Shelby Miller pitched six solid innings and had an RBI double for host St. Louis.
Rangers 3, Braves 2: Lisalverto Bonilla went six innings and won his major-league debut for host Texas. Atlanta's Julio Teheran (13-12) took a no-hitter into the sixth. -- AP
